Who can start training in MMA?
Although having a previous mix of experiences grappling and striking will greatly aid in the advancement of MMA skill, it is not required. Our classes teach basics and fundamentals to beginners, as well as advanced techniques to experienced students and fighters. We have a minimum age requirement of 18 years of age.

Is MMA helpful for conditioning and weight loss?
Due to increasingly talented competition, MMA fighters strive for optimal body conditioning to become the strongest, fastest, and most skilled fighter of any given weight class. Cutting weight is (reducing) is a large part of MMA competition. A fighter increases his odds of winning while being closer to his or her optimal weight. Cutting weight requires extensive knowledge of dieting and training. As a result, the process has given birth to some of the most effective exercises for weight loss and conditioning. Utilizing dynamic strength and conditioning exercises keeps your muscles guessing. MMA training also relies on rapid conditioning that builds fast reflexes and superior endurance. With any successful weight loss program, consistent effort and proper nutrition are important factors.

What is the difference between MMA and the other combat sports/martial arts?
MMA is a unique combat sport because of the limited number of rules. Although rules vary between organization and promotions, MMA is about the application of technique and athleticism. The constant evolution of MMA requires athletes to learn striking, stand-up grappling, and ground fighting. Where most combat sports only focus on one dimension of the game, MMA is practiced in all dimensions of combat.

What is MMA derived from?
MMA techniques are derived from the successful application of martial arts in combat sports. Through no holds barred fights, many techniques from traditional martial arts have been filtered out. MMA is constantly being revolutionized through what works in competition. Successful MMA fighters have come from multiple fighting backgrounds ranging from Boxing to BJJ to Muay Thai to Sambo.

What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA?
Although many Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques are learned in MMA, BJJ techniques for the most part focus on fighting an opponent on the ground. MMA encompass a greater variety of techniques to win fights in a variety of positions, including standing up. Skill sets from freestyle wrestling, Greco roman wrestling, Judo, and Sambo that allow a greater control of the direction of the fight. In addition, the practice of MMA will help you gauge your pain threshold and how much impact you can really take from strikes, either standing up or on the ground via ground and pound. MMA practitioners generally have excellent physical fitness they are more well-rounded with not only strength and resistance training but with high levels of cardio.

Why learn MMA?
Learning MMA is a very effective form of martial art; students will only learn skills that have been proven in rings, cages, and on the street. It takes years to master skills in wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Sambo, or even Judo. Why not weed out martial art skills and drills that do not work as efficiently in a multifaceted combat environment? For instance, devastating wrestling techniques leave the back exposed to an opponent. There are several guards from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, such as the X-Guard, that have little application in MMA because of the exposure to strikes. Another example is the pulling guard; it works in grappling, however in MMA it increases your chances of losing a fight. Learning the skills of MMA will help you find weaknesses in your opponent that you would have never seen before. MMA is currently the fastest growing sport in the world and we believe it is the future of martial arts.

Is there sparring in MMA class?
Like all effective martial arts, there is live sparring and drills in class. People with similar experience levels and weights are matched as closely as possible. Sparring is usually done at slower speeds to minimize the risk of injury. This practice also helps focus on applying technique. Sparring gear such as mouth guards, headgear, shin guards, boxing gloves, anklets, MMA gloves, and hand wraps, helps to protect all areas of your body

What do I need to bring to my first class?
Come at least 20 minutes before class starts and fill out an application. If you are taking a trial class, please bring your photo ID. Workout shorts and a tee-shirt or tank top are fine for practice, and baggy clothing should be avoided. MMA practitioners can also wear rash guards, board shorts, and quick-dry clothing. If you have your own gloves and hand wraps, please bring them.

Do you train women in MMA?
Yes, all our Fighthouse classes are co-educational. Women receive the same exact training and attitude as their male counterparts. We take pride in not only teaching women martial arts, but empowering women with a life skill.
