The ancient art of Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand. Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is a stand-up striking system that has proven to be the most effective standup fighting system amongst UFC and other Mixed Martial Arts competitions. Muay Thai is often confused with kickboxing. The differences being in Muay Thai you can throw kicks below the belt, as well as elbows and knees. Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardiovascular endurance as well as fighting spirit. Muay Thai, also known as the Art of Eight Limbs, utilizes eight points of contact, the fists, elbows, knees, and shins. In addition, Muay Thai fighters learn the Thai Clinch, which is an extremely devastating standup grappling position to throw knees and elbows onto your opponent. What separates Muay Thai from other martial arts is that practitioners learn to throw their body weight via hip movement in every strike, whether it be a cross, uppercut, roundhouse, elbow, or knee. Also, the Muay Thai blocking system is one of the most practical and effective ways to neutralize punches and kicks. In some cases the counter to roundhouses known as the shin-check has redeemed the defender by snapping the attacker's shin in half.
Muay Thai training is very practical as beginners start off with Thai warm up exercises and stretches, specific conditioning, and beginner level pad work, all of which minimize the risk of injury. Many of the movements in Thai boxing focus on utilizing the core of the body, meaning the abdominal and stabilizer muscles located in the midsection of the body. As a practitioner develops basic understanding of the techniques as well as sound conditioning, he or she will start learning longer combinations and aggressive defenses. At the intermediate levels and higher, Thai Training methods focus on live training drills as well as sparring.
