| Systema Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the history of Systema? Are there classes for beginners? Are there belts or ranks? What about tournaments? What should I wear to class? Is Systema suitable for women? Why don't you use mats or protective gear? What is the history of Systema? The Russian style of martial art dates back to the 10th century. Throughout the history of this huge country, Russia had to repel invaders from the north, south, east, and west. All attackers brought their distinct styles of combat and weaponry. The battles took place on different terrain, during freezing winters and sweltering summer heat alike, with the Russians often greatly outnumbered by the enemy forces. As a result of these factors, the Russian warriors acquired a style that combined strong spirit with extremely innovative and versatile tactics that were at the same time practical, deadly, and effective against any type of enemy under any circumstances. The style was natural and free while having no strict rules, rigid structure or limitations (except for moral ones). All tactics were based on instinctive reactions, individual strengths and characteristics, specifically designed for fast learning. When the Communists came to power in 1917, they suppressed all national traditions. Those practicing the old style of fighting could be severely punished. At the same time, the authorities quickly realized how viable and devastating the original combat system was and reserved it just for a few Special Operations Units. In our schools and through the instructional materials, you will learn this fascinating style and see for yourself why Russian Systema is said to open a new page in the world of martial arts. Are there classes for beginners? All levels of students train together. Systema is easy to learn and most beginners will acquire good self-defense skills within the first four months of consistent training. | |||||||||
| Are there belts or ranks? What about tournaments? There are no belts or ranks in Systema, except for the instructor certification. Systema is for self-defense and combat. It is not a sport and there are no tournaments. What should I wear to class? You can wear anything that is comfortable for physical exercise. Please do not wear black-soled shoes that will mark the wooden floor. You may go barefoot if you prefer. Our students have found that cargo or camoflauge pants and tee shirts are the most comfortable for training. Please remove jewelry before training. Is Systema suitable for women? Systema is one of the best martial arts for women because you do not need superior strength to prevail over your opponent. All tactics are based upon instinctive reactions and individual strengths and limitations of human body. We have several female students at Fighthouse and all enjoy the same training as their male counterparts. Why don't you use mats or protective gear? It is unlikely that there will be mats or protective gear in a true survival situation. To be well-prepared to defend yourself in any situation, you must become accustomed to falling on hard surfaces and accepting kicks and strikes without protective padding. Do not worry, you will soon get used to training without protective padding or mats and most students learn to prefer it. | ||||||||||
